NCLEX-PN Exam and Duration
The exam is conducted through CAT which stands for Computer Adaptive Test. It is basically an interactive testing system which forms questions based on the different responses of the candidates. This exam structure substantially reduces the difficulty level for certain candidates. There are no security risks within this exam framework, which leaves more space for better accuracy and precision. Candidates can be assessed easily based on their nursing skills and a reliable measure of their knowledge. Note that candidates are advised to answer each question very carefully. Once you have submitted the solution, you are not allowed to go back to the same question again.
At first, the questions will be elementary with the least competence. As you go further into the test, you will be offered with more difficult questions. The effective computer system will help to determine your level of competence.
The exam is primarily focused on meeting the needs of the clients. The content of the exam is integrated into one along with medical, surgical, psychiatric, pediatric and obstetric classes. The test focuses on a high level of critical-thinking and includes application and analysis-based questions. As the test covers skills necessary to practice as a nurse, candidates are required to have a strong foundation on the subject matter before taking the exam. There are four main categories of exam content:
- Safe Effective Care Environment
- Health maintenance and promotion
- Physiological integrity
- Psychosocial integrity
There’s no particular order of the sections in the exam.
NCLEX-PN contains between 85 and 205 questions (avg. 112). There will be also 25 compulsory experimental questions for candidates to attend. The test consists of multiple-choice and other kinds of questions like a hot spot, fill-in-the-blank, exhibit, sound and even drag-and-drop. There is no time limit provided for each of the questions. The total duration of the exam is 5 hours which includes the tutorial given in the start. You will be offered with a break after 2 hours of the exam.
You are not allowed to bring any additional writing instrument with you to attend the exam. There will be an on-screen calculator provided along with an erasable note board and marker to help you make notes.
The total cost for NCLEX-PN exam is about $200. There may be some additional fees depending on the nursing program in your school. You are required to send the completed application form and fees to NCS Pearson. You can pay via prepaid card, debit card or credit card.

Your results will be delivered to you through the state board of nursing within two to six weeks from the day you appeared on the exam. Candidates who successfully meet or go beyond the passing standard are considered to pass the exam.
In case you fail to show proper safety and effective care knowledge, then you may have to re-appear the exam. Your results will be provided with a diagnostic review of the whole exam paper, so you can focus on preparing yourself better for the next try. Candidates can retake the exam between 45 and 90 days after their previous attempt. You have to notify the appropriate board of nursing that you intend to retake the exam.
